The United States is hosting the World Cup for the second time in history, and the 2026 team has added multiple historic moments for USMNT fans to remember, even if their Round of 16 exit was poor.
The 1994 World Cup included one of the most iconic moments in US soccer history when the hosts were able to upset one of the tournament favorites, Colombia, 2-1. Midfielder John Harkes opened the scoring by putting in a cross that Colombian Andres Escobar touched in as an own goal. The US followed up with a second goal after a nice chip pass from midfielder Tab Ramos found Earnie Stewart, who slotted home the eventual winner. The United States were able to hold off Colombia and secure the nation's first World Cup win in 44 years in front of over 90,000 fans at Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, California.
Since the '94 World Cup, soccer has seen a massive boom in the States. Major League Soccer has become a structurally sound domestic league with a development pathway from youth levels to the pros. On the international stage, there have been several iconic moments and US legends that have materialized in the 21st century since the last time the World Cup was stateside.
Here's our top 5 moments in US men's soccer history since 1994 till today:
2002 - "Dos a Cero"
A massive moment for the United States as they were able to beat their rivals Mexico in the World Cup Round of 16 to advance to the Quarterfinals for the first time in the modern era. The US opened the scoring early in Jeonju, South Korea, after Claudio Reyna made a driving run to the byline and found Josh Wolff in the box. Wolff laid it off for Brian McBride, who drilled home the opening goal inside of 10 minutes. Landon Donovan's header off an Eddie Lewis cross in the second half sealed the win for the Americans and the third straight 2-0 win against the Mexicans.

2010 - "From hope, there is glory!"
In stoppage time at Loftus Versfield Stadium in Tshwane/Pretoria, South Africa, the United States hit Algeria on the break after Tim Howard played the ball forward to Landon Donovan, who found Jozy Altidore in the box. Altidore centered the ball to Clint Dempsey, whose attempt was saved, but not secured. Donovan was able to pounce on the rebound and slam home the game-winner to beat the Algerians 1-0 and advance to the Round of 16 of the 2010 World Cup. This was the first time the USMNT had topped their World Cup Group since 1930.

2009 - Snapping Spain's 35-game unbeaten run
In the semifinals of the 2009 Confederations Cup, the US took on European Champions Spain, who were currently on a 35-game unbeaten run that spanned nearly three years. Jozy Altidore scored to give the US a first-half lead and, after withstanding pressure from Spain, put the game away after the break when Clint Dempsey put home the second. The US advanced to the Final against Brazil, where they lost 3-2.
2014 - Tim Howard breaks World Cup saves record
In the Round of 16, the USMNT and Tim Howard had to absorb a ton of pressure from Belgium's Golden Generation. Howard recorded a World Cup record 16 saves in the game and kept a 0-0 clean sheet through 90 minutes. The Belgians were able to break through in extra time when they put two goals past the American legend to win 2-1, leaving the US just short of making a Quarterfinal run.

2021 - US beats Mexico in inaugural Concacaf Nations League Final
In 2021, the USMNT played Mexico in the first Concacaf Nations League Final. Jesus Corona opened the scoring in the second minute for Mexico, but Gio Reyna was able to equalize later in the first half. Diego Lainez gave Mexico a second-half lead, and the US's Weston McKennie was able to respond with a goal of his own, forcing extra time. In extra time, Christian Pulisic scored the game-winner from the penalty spot, and Ethan Horvath, who subbed in for Zack Steffen, made a late penalty save to secure an American victory in a thrilling final between the two rivals.
The USMNT in 2026
In the 2026 World Cup, the United States showed both how far the nation has come since 1994 and still how much work there is to do. In the Group Stage, the US played as well as they ever have, making light work of Paraguay and Australia, and clinching top spot in Group D. After losing 3-2 against Turkiye in a meaningless third game with a heavily rotated squad, the US played Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32 where they won 2-0, holding on to the lead down a man.
Up until this point, the hype around this US team had rarely been higher. They were scoring goals and looking like a clear level ahead of their opposition. Something that had not been seen consistently in years past.
However, in the big moment, a Round of 16 matchup against Belgium with a record number of viewers (over 50 million across Fox and Telemundo), the US fell woefully short.
Top 21st-century USMNT moments show the team hanging on and surviving against teams like Algeria. The progress from this World Cup shows this team can separate itself from teams below them in the FIFA Rankings. If that trend continues through the next cycle, then that is an observable improvement.
What is left wanting is the ability to withstand the big moments when all the eyes and excitement are on them against some of the best teams in the world. That moment has still been too big, and until that hurdle is passed, many of the USA's top memories will continue to be those regional victories against Mexico.
