Charlotte FC vs Atlanta United FC match preview: Predicted Starting XI and player matchup

Just like reuniting with an old friend, Charlotte FC returns to The Bank tonight to kick off the second half of MLS Regular Season.

Prior to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Charlotte landed in 6th place in the Eastern Conference standings with a 6W-6L-3D record.

And to welcome them back is their rivals, Atlanta United, in the latest edition of the "Battle of the South."

The most recent meeting between CLTFC and ATL was in the 2026 U.S. Open Cup, where The Crown fell 2-0. However, heavy rotations on behalf of Charlotte did not reflect the intensity of the usual Starting XI.

Back during the 2025 MLS Regular Season, Charlotte faced Atlanta twice, winning both matches.

Goals from Wilfried Zaha, Pep Biel, and Idan Toklomati demonstrated Charlotte's raw attacking power during those regular-season matches.

Yet Charlotte FC looks different after the international break, with the departure of left winger Zaha. Additionally, rumors regarding Kerwin Vargas' potential transfer leave fans questioning what Zoran has in store for the squad moving forward.

The departure of Zaha and the pending visa for Allan Saint-Maximin ahead of tonight's matchup leaves the left wing wildly unstable in transitional play, let alone the attacking third.

Today's matchup to watch focuses on Charlotte's unsteady left wing, more specifically, the left fullback spot against Atlanta's attacking unit.

Harry Toffolo - CLTFC - Left Back

Joining the club in early August of 2025, Harry Toffolo quickly became a key member of the Charlotte community.

Prior to joining Charlotte, the fullback spent his career in England, most recently with Nottingham Forrest FC.

So far in 2026, the English left-back has played in 10 matches, recording two assists. His defensive contributions sit at 59, and he has earned 33 recoveries across his appearances.

Toffolo's composure on defense also demonstrates his veteran status, having only two yellow cards.

As a natural leader, Toffolo controls games simply with his tactical intelligence and is a key asset to stabilizing the back line.

On the flip side, Toffolo has suffered multiple injuries early in this season. Most recently, dealing with a hamstring and lower-body injury, he was sidelined for just over a month.

His much-awaited return will be necessary for Charlotte's longevity in the second half of the season.

Cooper Sanchez - ATL - Right Winger

In Atlanta's last two regular-season matches, head coach Tata Martino started the homegrown player Cooper Sanchez on the right wing.

The young midfielder is one of Atlanta's most promising young prospects. With numerous call-ups to the U-16 and U-17 United States National Teams, Sanchez represents nothing but potential.

He made his first MLS appearances back in 2025 with Atlanta, including one start against Inter Miami CF. Sanchez even earned minutes in the Leagues Cup but spent most of his time with their MLS NEXT Pro affiliate, ATL UTD 2.

So far this season, Sanchez has played in 14 matches, earning 13 starts. Out of his 1024 minutes of play, he has made 4 assists. He also contributes significantly to Atlanta's defense, recording 40 recoveries and 31 defensive contributions.

Overall, Sanchez's rapid development has earned him the title of a regular starter. His composure and international experience from a young age make him a regular playmaker for Atlanta.

Summary 

Today's battle features a seasoned English defender returning from injury against one of MLS's brightest homegrown attacking prospects.

Toffolo provides crucial defensive stability and veteran composure, but he must quickly find his rhythm after a month-long injury layoff.

Conversely, Sanchez brings youthful energy and sharp playmaking ability, having already secured four assists as a regular starter this season.

The outcome of the game hinges on whether Toffolo’s tactical intelligence can successfully neutralize Sanchez’s rapid attacking threat on the flank.

Predicted Starting XI

Defensive Unit

Kristijan Kahlina returns to face a team he and the rest of this Charlotte FC team are all too familiar with. Kahlina holds a three-game win streak against Atlanta, sweeping them in both 2025 starts.

USMNT Captain Tim Ream will trade out the stars and stripes for the blue and white. He will likely share the center alongside Morrison Agyemang.

The English left-back, Harry Toffolo, will likely return to play since David Schnegg is suspended for tonight's match.

During this week's presser, Dean Smith mentioned that Will Cleary and Nathan Byrne suffered some knocks from the first half of the season and have not practiced as much as Smith would like; yet, both players are available for selection.

Tyler Miller, Henry Kessler, and Andrew Privett will likely be available on the bench for the defensive unit.

Midfield 

With his bobblehead giveaway tonight, Ashley Westwood will be a player to look out for in the midfield. It will be interesting to see if Westwood feels the “Bobblehead night effect” and puts on a midfield masterclass.

He will be joined by MLS All-Star Pep Biel the midfield will be rounded out by Djibril Diani.

Brandt Bronico and Luca De La Torre will be available as subs.

Forward line

Tonight, we see the Charlotte FC attack for the first time in the post-Zaha era. With Allan Saint-Maximin still yet to get his visa approved, Dean Smith will have to look at a scarce forward line following the World Cup break.

A line with the potential to be even scarcer, with Kerwin Vargas gaining the attention of Brazilian club Athletico Paranaense. For tonight, he will likely take his usual place on the right side.

Up top, Idan Toklomati will likely start despite also feeling some discomfort before the international break.

Rounding out the forward line, we could see Smith field Liel Abada and Archie Goodwin, but the young forward Rodolfo Aloko could also see a start against Atlanta. 

If Aloko does not start, he will be available as a sub, as will Tyger Smalls.
