“Respect the opposition, but don’t fear them”: Charlotte FC ready for Decision Day test at Inter Miami

Charlotte FC heads into the final match of the regular season with one last opportunity to make a statement before the MLS Cup Playoffs. The Crown travel to South Florida to face Inter Miami CF on Decision Day, with a chance to secure home-field advantage in the First Round still within reach.
Charlotte has already secured its place in the postseason, but its final Eastern Conference position remains to be decided. The Crown currently sits fifth, two points behind the Chicago Fire, who face Columbus Crew. A Charlotte victory combined with Chicago dropping points would move Dean Smith’s side into fourth place and give them home-field against the Fire.
Despite the stakes, Smith wants his team focused on the challenge in front of them rather than the other results around the league.
“We have to make sure defensively we're good, we're focused, we can't play with freedom, but we can play with an attacking intent,” Smith said. “Respect the opposition, but don't fear them.”
A Final Test Against Messi and Miami
There may not be a more difficult final regular-season opponent than Inter Miami. Led by Lionel Messi and surrounded by attacking talent, Miami presents a significant challenge for a Charlotte side looking to carry its recent momentum into the postseason.
Smith acknowledged the quality Miami possesses, specifically highlighting Messi's ability to change a game with a moment of individual brilliance.
“He's just a joy to watch,” Smith said of Messi, pointing to the Argentine's quick thinking, technical ability and finishing.
For Charlotte, the challenge will be limiting those moments while remaining dangerous going forward. Smith emphasized the importance of being difficult to play through, staying organized defensively and remaining composed in possession.
Brandt Bronico echoed that assessment, noting that while Miami can be dangerous in attack, there are opportunities to exploit on the other side of the ball.
“They're very talented in the attack with the players that they have, but they can also be very vulnerable... on the other side of the ball,” Bronico said.
The midfielder believes Charlotte must stay compact, limit Messi's opportunities to create and take advantage of the space Miami leaves behind. Getting into one-on-one situations, running at defenders and making the most of chances in the final third will be important for the Crown.
Charlotte Finding Its Attacking Rhythm
Charlotte enters Decision Day in a much different attacking position than it was earlier in the season. After prioritizing defensive stability during the opening months, Smith believes his side has developed into a more dangerous team going forward.
“From there to now, I think we create a lot more. We score a lot more,” Smith said.
The Crown have scored eight goals across their last two matches, including consecutive 4-0 victories. Their recent performances have provided a timely confidence boost ahead of the playoffs, and Smith hopes the team is hitting its stride at the right moment.
“Let's hope we are peaking at the right time,” he said.
Bronico has also noticed the difference in Charlotte's attack. He pointed to the contributions of the team's attacking options, including Pep Biel, Idan Toklomati, Liel Abada, Rodolfo Aloko and Allan Saint-Maximin, as well as Assistant Coach Karl Hooper's ability to help connect the attack.
That depth will be particularly important against Miami, as Saint-Maximin will miss the match through suspension. Smith acknowledged that losing a Designated Player is always significant, but believes the team's recent performances have shown there are goals throughout the squad.
Charlotte scored twice in its win over Portland without Saint-Maximin, giving the coaching staff confidence that others can step up.
“There's goals within the team, and it's an opportunity for others,” Smith said.
Bronico Ready for Decision Day
For Bronico, Decision Day is familiar territory. The midfielder has been part of every Charlotte FC Decision Day since the club entered MLS, including the memorable 2023 meeting with Miami.
This time around, he sees the situation as an opportunity for the Crown to build momentum before the playoffs.
“Yeah, that's probably a good way to put it,” Bronico said when asked whether Charlotte could approach the match with a “house money” mentality.
The midfielder made it clear that the team's focus remains on winning, regardless of what happens in the Chicago-Columbus match.
“Control what we can control,” Bronico said. “We just have to go out there and do our job, get the win, and then we'll check the score after.”
Bronico also made clear that simply reaching the playoffs is no longer the standard Charlotte wants to settle for.
“The minimum is that we have to make playoffs... anything less than that is a failure,” he said.
Now that the postseason berth is secured, the focus has shifted toward how far this group can go. Charlotte wants to move beyond its previous first-round exits and make a deeper run.
One More Opportunity Before the Playoffs
Smith believes his team has responded well after a difficult stretch of road matches against Columbus, Philadelphia and Portland. The two emphatic victories that followed have helped restore confidence, and the manager sees a group that is ready for the postseason.
Still, Miami presents a major test. The Crown will need to balance their attacking ambition with the defensive discipline Smith has repeatedly emphasized, especially against a side capable of punishing even the smallest mistake.
A win would give Charlotte a chance to finish fourth in the East, but the result also carries importance beyond the standings. A strong performance against one of the league's most talented teams would provide another opportunity to show what this group can do heading into the playoffs.
