Hugo Mbongue signed with Crown Legacy FC at the beginning of 2026 after growing up in Toronto FC's youth system, development team, and short stints with the First Team. The young forward remembered Charlotte from his Toronto FC days, "That was my first MLS start...you work so hard your whole career to get to that moment...that first start was [At Bank of America Stadium]."

Mbongue's leadership qualities resonated in Charlotte quickly. When Legacy's Captain Willian Sangoquiza went down with an injury, Mbongue was given the responsibility to wear the armband even though he had just been signed a few months earlier. "It was a new role for me being the leader of a group, because I've always been one of if not the youngest on my team...it was a different challenge, a different experience, but one that I took on, one that I relished," said the Canadian International.

Being a veteran in the group is one thing, but leadership also requires an example on the pitch, which is something Mbongue has shown in droves this season, breaking Legacy's season goal scoring record with 14 to go with four assists. It's easy to highlight just the goals when it comes to a striker but there is more nuance and defensive acumen to his game. "I'm someone who likes to hold the ball up, link with my teammates, I like to score goals, but I also really like to press, pressing center backs, putting center backs under it that's a part of the game I enjoy," Mbongue stated.

His work rate and physicality were on display during Legacy's First Round game last week, and the expectation is more of the same will be required against the Columbus Crew 2 tonight. "You have to earn the right to play, at the start of the game you have to not only match, but exceed the opposition's level of intensity and physicality, and I think we did a good job of that [against RBNY II]...coming up against [Columbus Crew 2] it will be more of the same, earning the right to play, winning your battles, winning your duels, and then let the football do the rest," Mbongue emphasized.

The Columbus Crew has established one of the clearest playing styles in MLS through recent seasons, and its a style that is played top-to-bottom throughout the entire organization, highlighted by their 3-4-3 formation and short combination passing. "Not letting them have time in the middle of the pitch...if we stay really compact, we don't let them come through us, we force them to play around us...we know in attacking transition how good we are and we will find joy there," Mbongue said was a key for Legacy to find success tonight.
