Charlotte FC continues its batch of home matches this Saturday, welcoming Inter Miami CF to The Bank. High off their 3-1 win last weekend against Austin FC, Charlotte will be looking to shake off the ghosts of matchdays past.

The 2025 MLS Cup winners, Miami, narrowly escaped with a 2-1 win over DC United last week, pushing them into 3rd place in the Eastern standings. Charlotte FC, however, with their rocky start, trails in 6th place.

The Crown met Inter Miami twice last season, suffering a 1-0 loss on the road and then securing a 3-0 win at home. During the 2025 season, Charlotte was under head coach Dean Smith, finishing 4th in the Eastern Conference.

During the 2025 season, Inter Miami landed in 3rd place in the Western Conference, bringing home an MLS Cup against Vancouver. In his second season at the helm is Javier Mascherano. The Argentinian head coach granted the Herons their first MLS Cup while also making consistent headlines with his star-studded lineup.

Heading into the 2026 season, Inter Miami focused on securing defensive and overall squad depth. Major signings such as the 2025 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, Dayne St. Clair, and defender Sergio Regulión have only solidified the already dominant Miami lineup. Needless to say, Miami’s attack contains one of the greatest players of all time, who needs no introduction, Lionel Messi.

In 2025 alone, Messi scored 43 goals across all competitions, winning the MLS Golden Boot. At his side is notable Argentine player Rodrigo De Paul, giving this group a mini-Argentina National Team vibe. Heading into Saturday, Miami’s attacking line will keep the Crown on their toes, with particular attention granted to Messi.

Charlotte FC was not entirely silent during the 2025 season and into its off-season. Unfortunately, Charlotte had to say goodbye to cherished center back Adilson Malanda, as he departed to join Middlesbrough in the EFL Championship league. Then, CLTFC released defender Bill Tuiloma, who signed on with A-League side Wellington Phoenix FC.

To offset losses, the squad brought in former Nottingham Forest defender Harry Toffolo late in the 2025 season. Additionally, fullback Nathan Byrne made his return after a lengthy recovery from injured disks in his neck. Despite the fluctuation in Charlotte’s back line, one player has remained a staple for the team since the summer of 2024: Tim Ream.

Tim Ream - Charlotte FC - Center Back

Making his debut with the Queen City in August 2024, centerback Tim Ream provided CLTFC with depth in their back line. Ream was drafted in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft by the New York Red Bulls, earning 58 appearances. From there, Ream transitioned to the Bolton Wanderers in EFL League One before joining Fulham from 2015 to 2024. Ream’s most notable achievement is his consistent roster spot with the United States National Team. Since November 2010, Ream has made 77 caps for the USMNT.

Under CLTFC, Tim Ream has made 49 appearances across all competitions. During the 2025 regular season, Ream was responsible for 29 tackles and about 31 interceptions. All the while, his composure only granted him two yellow cards with no red cards the entire regular season. As Charlotte FC evaluates several other center backs, including Morrison Agyemang and Andrew Privett to fill the void left by Malanda, Tim Ream holds down the back line. His veteran experience and knack for leading will be needed to trip up Miami’s pressing line.

Lionel Messi - Inter Miami CF - Forward / Attacking Midfielder

Lionel Messi, or the G.O.A.T, will be the largest threat to CLTFC’s backline Saturday night. His intense footskills and lethal playmaking vision will be a one-of-a-kind challenge for Charlotte’s wavering back line. His flair-driven attacking style creates chances in tight one-on-one situations. Statistics on Messi’s career are only a fraction of his abilities on the field. In 2025 alone, Messi had MLS’s highest expected goal contributions during the regular season: 25.44 xG and 16.98 xA.

Despite Messi’s age, he is practically unstoppable on the field. So far this season, Messi has already scored three goals for Inter Miami. From his precise passing and ability to navigate tight spaces, Messi will most likely confront Ream’s veteran status head-on during Matchday 4.

Summary

The match sets up a compelling showcase: Charlotte’s backline, anchored by the composed and experienced Tim Ream, must find a way to neutralize Miami’s Argentinian attack featuring Messi.

With Charlotte still adjusting to Malanda's departure, Ream’s leadership will be the primary barrier against a Miami offense that has already dominated the 2026 season. Ultimately, Ream will have to draw on his USMNT captain mentality this weekend and lead Charlotte’s backline to more cohesive play.
